In 1960, Hartfield, a women's retail chain decided to enter the discount department store market with a new chain called Zodys. By 1979 the chain had a total of 37 stores, which operated in California, Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico, and Michigan. Zodys would file bankruptcy and become defunct in 1986.
